A description and classification of lesions associated to natural paratuberculosis infection has been made in goats, culled for any reason, from flocks with high number of clinical cases. A total of 136 adult goats, with and without clinical signs, have been evaluated by pathological methods. Samples from the ileocaecal valve, ileum, jejunum and mesenteric and ileocaecal lymph nodes were examined. Different types of lesion could be observed. The most remarkable findings were the following: - The presence of focal granulomatous lesions, tuberculoid type, associated exclusively to the organised intestinal lymphoid tissue (Peyer's patches), mainly located in the ileocaecal valve. They were consistent with similar lesions previously described in sheep. - The description of lesions consisting only in the presence of granulomata formed by macrophages, located exclusively in the apex of the intestinal villi, without causing the thickening of the wall and associated with severe clinical signs. - The observation of severe lesions characterised by an intense necrosis and calcification of the lymph nodes and the lymph channels of the serosa and the mesentery, in a high number of goats with severe diffuse lesions.
